Higher Education Mental Health Counselor: Clinical Psychologist / Licensed Professional Counselor / Licensed Clinical Social Worker for College Counseling Services
Location: Virginia Military Institute (VMI) Counseling Services
Job type: Full-time, 11-month contract About the Role: The Virginia Military Institute Center for Cadet Counseling is seeking a mental health professional (Clinical Psychologist, Licensed Professional Counselor, or Licensed Clinical Social Worker) to join our collaborative team.
While VMI is state-supported undergraduate senior military college, it is fundamentally an institute of higher education serving 1,500 college students. Prior military experience is not required to succeed in this position. Key Responsibilities:
Provide direct, in-person, short-term individual counseling
Conduct intakes, triage appointments, and crisis assessments
Develop, plan, and facilitate outreach programs and consultations for the campus community
Provide consultation services with faculty, staff, parents, and cadets
Provide substance abuse assessments and psychoeducation group
Assist with cadet retention activities
Provide on-call, after-hours coverage on a rotating basis with other clinical staff
Maintain timely, accurate, and confidential clinical documentation using an electronic health record.
Adhere to ethical guidelines, legal regulations, and university policies, including confidentiality and mandated reporting requirements.
Engage in assigned committee service and other functions that contribute to the academic mission of the Institute
The performance of other functions assigned by the Director that contribute to the service offerings of the CCC and the academic mission of the Institute.
Requirements
Minimum Education and Qualifications:
A Master’s degree in Clinical/Counseling Psychology, Professional Counseling, or Social work.
Current license as a Clinical Psychologist, Social Worker, or Professional Counselor in the Commonwealth of Virginia
Demonstrated understanding of adherence to ethical codes and applicable state and federal laws regarding the provision of mental health services.
Supervised experience in a mental health setting.

Additional Considerations:
A Doctorate degree in clinical or counseling psychology
Previous training and experience in a college or university counseling center
Experience with public speaking
Licensed eligible within the next 2 months in the Commonwealth of Virginia
Well-developed counseling and crisis intervention skills
