Description
The purpose of this position is to ensure public safety through the enforcement of the State of Texas and the City’s Building Code. An employee in this position inspects various residential, commercial or other structures to ensure adherence to the building, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical and/or other related codes, regulations and policies. This position is responsible for investigating and resolving advanced technical and customer relations while exercising considerable independent judgment, functioning with minimal supervision and having limited supervisory duties. Work is performed within the framework provided by the various construction codes and building policies.
Essential Functions:

- Performs inspections at various stages of construction for compliance with building construction codes and policies. Examples include:
- Building: inspects footing, slab, wall, beams/columns, roofs, concrete, framework and the installation of components and cladding.
- Electrical: inspects conduit size, breaker size, wire size, circuit layout, fixtures and equipment.
- Plumbing: inspects soil lines, pipe size, location of fixtures, water supply lines, vents and shutoffs.
- Mechanical: inspects duct sizes, penetration protection, equipment schedules, ventilation system, gas installation and material specifications.
- Reads and interprets plans, specifications, correspondence and related construction documents.
- Provides technical assistance and advice on difficult or unusual construction problems, methods or materials.
- Performs emergency inspections to resolve difficult problems.
- Explains and interprets construction codes to owners, contractors, design professionals, the general public and construction personnel.
- Prepares and maintains technical reports.
- Interacts professionally and respectfully with the public, coworkers and others in the course of daily work.
- Regular and timely attendance are required for this position.
- Must report to work for duty outside normally scheduled work hours in response to natural disasters, emergencies or critical incidents as determined by City Administration.
Requirements
Requires an Associate’s Degree or specialized courses/training equivalent to satisfactory completion of two (2) years of college in construction management, engineering or related field and four (4) years of experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
Must possess and maintain a valid State of Texas Driver’s License.
Requires Texas State Board of Plumbing Inspector’s License
