DescriptionSalary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity.
Employees perform duties involved in the administration of academic, administrative, and/or other programs. Assist in the administration of a centralized program(s), working under general supervision from a designated supervisor.
Examples of Duties
Wellness and Health Promotion Services (WHPS) provides current and accurate health information about important lifestyle decisions, wellness programming, and outreach. Primary emphasis will be on HEROES resource center inventory, wellness outreach and resource promotion, peer education, and prevention education in physical health, nutrition, sexual health, alcohol and other drugs, stress management, resilience and coping strategies, violence prevention, health equity, and other areas of wellness that impact student success.
Program Development: Plan, implement and evaluate health promotion programs using theory evidence-informed health promotion strategies, policies, programs and services based on student/campus needs. Stays current on national health behavior trends and research.
Generate input from constituency groups and key stakeholders. Provide leadership in coordinating health promotion programs, policies, and initiatives across campus and in the community. Create educational workshops, media events, training activities and develop handouts. Maximize persistence and retention rates of SIU students through programming that addresses academic impediments. Assess achievement of program objectives. Collect, analyze and interpret results for health promotion programs and workshops. Summarize assessment results and develop data reports on outreach efforts.
Direct Service: Lead workshops, train, direct, and supervise graduate assistants, student employees, volunteers, and interns. Advocate for policy and environmental changes as necessary. Student Workers in WHPS are responsible for providing wellness and health education, promotion, and peer education to SIU students.
Collaboration: Collaborate with other SIUC departments including, but not limited to, University Housing, Student Development, and Athletics. Must also collaborate with local government and NPO organizations to maximize resources to effectively implement programs. Collaborative undertakings include recruitment and training of practicum students, interns and volunteers.
Health Promotion Specialization: In addition to understanding health and behavior change, this position will be responsible for one or more of the following processes in health promotion: Health Communication & Marketing; Assessment & Evaluation; Technology & Social Media; Student Development and Leadership; Grant Writing and Grant Management; or Target Populations (i.e. Greeks, Athletics, Housing).
Committee Leadership: Participate in campus, community, regional, state and national committees as designated to review policies and procedures that impact students' health and academic success.
Qualifications
1. Bachelor's degree in health education, health promotion, public health, community health, health policy, or closely related field.*
2. A total of one (1) year (12 months) in health promotion/wellness experience required. Paid or unpaid internship or graduate assistant experience accepted as one year experience or as part of one year experience.* (Note: Master's Degree in an area consistent with the duties of the position may be substituted for one (1) year of work experience.)
Preferred Quals: Experience with one or more areas of Wellness to include Alcohol & Drugs, Sexual Health, or Violence Prevention. Experience in a higher education setting.

Illinois Residency Requirement: Pursuant to the State Universities Civil Service System, out-of-state candidates must establish Illinois residency within 180 calendar days of the start date for this position.

About Civil Service Examination/Testing: The Civil Service examination for this classification is based on your application materials and responses to the supplemental questions. No participation other than submission of application materials is required from applicants that qualify to take the exam. If you meet the minimum required qualifications for this position, your application will move forward for examination/testing in which you will receive a score calculated based on your education and experience, and your name will be placed on the active employment register by exam score. This score will be emailed to the email address noted on your application. After the application deadline, the names within the top three scores will be referred to the department for interview.
