Job Summary
This position involves performing a combination of skilled equipment operations, preventive maintenance, and manual labor tasks in roadway maintenance. The role includes participating in emergency roadway operations as an essential employee, ensuring safe and efficient road conditions under all circumstances.
Key Responsibilities
Emergency Operations
Prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal or other emergency operations.
Clear roadways of snow, ice, and debris, and assist with cleanup after accidents.
Provide traffic control during emergency and maintenance operations.
Equipment Operations
Operate and maintain light, medium, and heavy-duty highway equipment and vehicles for maintenance and construction-related tasks.
Job Safety
Identify and mitigate workplace safety hazards; suggest improvements.
Demonstrate proper worksite protection techniques and comply with OSHA, VOSHA, and other safety regulations.
Use personal protective equipment (PPE) properly and maintain a clean, safe work environment.
Apply MUTCD standards for detours, lane closures, and work zones.
Manual Labor
Participate as a working crew member to complete roadway projects.
Perform manual labor using a variety of hand and power tools to complete assigned maintenance tasks.
Preventive Maintenance
Conduct preventive maintenance, repairs, and replacements as needed.
Perform pre-trip inspections for vehicles and equipment.
Traffic Control Devices
Install, maintain, and remove traffic control devices for work zones, detours, and lane closures following MUTCD standards.
Assist with tracking inventory and maintaining related documentation.
Requirements
Qualifications
Core Competencies
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Ability to read and interpret work plans, sketches, and specifications.
Ability to complete accurate documentation and maintain inventory records.
Capable of performing heavy manual labor and working effectively as part of a team.
Knowledge of work zone safety, flagging operations, and MUTCD standards.
Understanding of highway maintenance equipment, materials, and procedures.
Proficiency with hand and power tools, as well as light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment.
Licenses & Certifications
Ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
Compliance with DOT and safety policies required when operating CDL equipment.
Safety shoes required.
Preferred Experience
Training or education in Maintenance, Vehicle Operations, or a related field.
Experience in emergency operations (e.g., snow removal, storm response, accident cleanup).
Experience in roadway maintenance, construction, and preventive equipment maintenance.
Valid Commercial Driver’s License with appropriate endorsements preferred.
