Overview
The Department of Marketing in the College of Business at Northern Illinois University invites applications for an experienced marketing professional focusing on sales. The candidate's education and experience will determine if they will hold a tenure-track (Assistant, Associate Professor, or Full Professor) or non-tenure track faculty position beginning August 2026. Candidates will be asked to indicate in their application which type and rank position they see as aligned with their background and accomplishments. The search committee will assess their qualifications and may invite them to interview for a different type or rank depending on their assessment.
Northern Illinois University is a comprehensive university and a Hispanic-serving institution with about 16,000 students located in DeKalb, Illinois, which is 65 miles west of downtown Chicago. The College of Business at NIU also has graduate programs in Chicago, Schaumburg, Naperville, and international locations. The Department of Marketing has eight full-time tenured/tenure-track faculty members and offers a diverse and collegial work environment in a state-of-the-art facility. The Department and the Professional Sales Program maintain extensive ties with the Chicago business community and offer our diverse learners ample opportunities for personal and professional growth. NIU's Professional Sales Program was the first university program awarded the distinction of providing a Certified Sales Curriculum by the Professional Society for Sales and Marketing Training ( SMT ) and is accredited by the University Sales Center Alliance. This extensive corporate involvement allows the department to provide generous support for research including resources for travel, data collection and research grants.
Position Summary
This position is a full-time, 9-month teaching position. In addition to teaching responsibilities, a tenured or tenure-track faculty member will be required to conduct high quality research and support the department, college, and university with service requirements. A non-tenure track faculty member will be required to teach and support the department, college, and university with service requirements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Primary teaching responsibilities will include teaching courses in sales and marketing (e.g., Principles of Selling, B2B Selling, Advanced Professional Selling, etc.) at the undergraduate, graduate and executive levels.
In addition to the teaching mentioned, the tenure-track faculty member will also be expected to conduct and publish high quality and impactful research, provide service to the department, college, and university and engage with practitioners.
A non-tenure-track faculty appointment will require teaching as previously mentioned, service to the department, college, and university while engaging with industry professionals. This service may include but not be limited to coaching students for sales competitions, helping them with job readiness and job searches, and networking with current sales program sponsors and partners.
Minimum Required Qualifications
The successful candidate will have demonstrated their expertise in the sales area through education and experience. Tenure-track applicants will have earned a doctorate in marketing or a related discipline from an AACSB -accredited institution by the time of appointment and demonstrate the potential to publish in high impact journals, teach effectively at undergraduate, graduate, and executive levels, work collaboratively within and across units, interact with practitioners, and have at least two years of significant sales experience. A.B.D. candidates are expected to complete all requirements for their terminal degree within one year of appointment.
Candidates hired at the Associate or Full Professor levels will have the requisite number and quality of publications as well as evidence of teaching credentials according to the Department's, College's, and University's personnel policies.
Non-tenure-track applicants must hold a master's or doctoral degree in marketing or a related discipline with five or more years of significant sales experience.

The ideal tenure-track or tenured candidate has a doctorate in marketing or a related field at the time of application, is a successful and experienced teacher, has published high quality research, has engaged with the business community, and has enthusiasm to support the missions of the Department, College, and University.
Non-tenure-track applicants will have a master's or doctoral degree in marketing or a related discipline, demonstrated managerial leadership experience in sales, some college-level teaching experience, and an enthusiasm to support the missions of the Department, College, and University.

The salary offered will be determined based on factors including (but not limited to) the experience and qualifications of the selected candidate along with any requirements as stipulated by applicable union contractual obligations.
