JOB SUMMARY
The Infusion Director is responsible for all patient care in the Infusion Department. The Director will interpret and support hospital medical staff philosophy, objectives and policies. The Director will assist the Associate Chief Nursing Officer and Chief Clinical Officer/Chief Nursing Officer in the following with emphasis on Performance Improvement in each of these functions: preparation of budget and management of those funds appropriately, development of long range plans in accordance with hospital goals, preparation of policies and guidelines for their departments, maintain a high quality service area and maintain a multidisciplinary Performance Improvement team within their departments. The Nurse Director is responsible for establishing and maintaining compliance with standards of nursing practice. Works with other Nurse Directors, members of management, medical staff and other clinical areas in planning, promoting and conducting organization wide performance improvement activities. The Director also provides direct nursing care to patients, families, groups and communities by instituting standards of best practices of Nursing Care for infant through geriatric patients on the department Units.
MAJOR JOB FUNCTION
- Manages and directs Infusion department Staff and performs the following: monitors performance standards, provides competency testing, provides in-services and education, holds and documents meetings following standardized meeting format, conducts new hire orientation, assesses performance annually, review and compute hours on time cards for payroll use and maintains ongoing list of departmental goals.
- Drafts and revises policies and procedures relating to Infusion services
- Prepares and monitors the budget for the operation of the Infusion Services department.
- Promotes and contributes to a positive, problem-solving environment.
- Maintains established hospital and departmental policies and guidelines, objectives, quality improvement program, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
- Enhances professional growth and development of self and others through participation in educational programs, current literature, in-service meetings and workshops.
- Provides direction and leadership to staff, students and new graduates.
- Maintains a professional attitude and observes proper ethics.
- Utilizes the nursing process as the basis for nursing care.
- Plans and implements nursing care from admission to post-discharge.
- Revises patient care plans to meet the changing needs of patients utilizing nursing assessment and diagnostic skills.
- Provides direct patient care.
- Provides patient care following physician orders and following a comprehensive plan of nursing care.
- Establishes and prioritizes patient care needs.
- Assesses the patient according to developed standards of care for each age group for which patient care is provided.
- Performs technical nursing skills safely and in accordance with current policies and procedures.
- Demonstrates the safe and effective use of medical and hospital equipment required for patient care.
- Recognizes and interprets signs and symptoms, institutes nursing care required and appropriately reports patient's condition to physician/provider.
- Maintains current knowledge of medications, including intravenous therapy medications, blood and blood products for all age groups.
- Administers all medications according to medication safety policies and procedures.
- Provides for Basic and/or Advanced Life Support as required by patient condition.
- Interacts effectively with patients through both oral and written communication. Uses appropriate verbal and non-verbal behavior to reinforce the content of the message.
- Documents and maintains data on the patient's record.
- Accurately completes documentation of observations and assessments correlating the comprehensive plan for nursing care and the medical plan of care.
- Documents patient progress on the medical record and/or appropriate flow sheets following current policies and procedures.
- Applies teaching and learning concepts to patient education.
- Identifies discharge planning and teaching needs with appropriate interventions implemented and documented, and works with discharge planners.
- Completes the discharge teaching forms accurately at discharge.
- Evaluates the effectiveness of the plan of care and change the plan of care as the patient's physical and emotional response and needs to teaching and medical interventions change.
- Utilizes effective communication skills with the patients and families to establish mutual goals and to provide comprehensive teaching and care plans that promote effective coping behaviors.
- Performs all nursing functions by the application of professional nursing principles.
- Collaborates with health team members in providing a comprehensive plan of care.
- Accountable for clinical practice and leadership in practice.
- Acts as a role model, resource, mentor and teacher.
- Participates in continuing education to develop and maintain skills that contribute to departmental achievement and hospital mission and goals.
- Acts as a patient advocate.
- Demonstrates proficiency in regards to the computer documentation of patient cares and any other related computerized patient information/documentation.
- Performs related work as required.

- This position works with or near hazardous medication in healthcare settings that may cause skin rashes, infertility, miscarriage, birth defects, and possibly leukemia or other cancers.
- This position will be provided with didactic training that reflects the policies and procedures on hazardous medications with the opportunity to ask questions. This will be done upon hire and annually thereafter.
- This position is expected to agree and abide by Tomah Health Hazardous Medication policies and procedures at all times.
- Failure to follow established policies and procedures may increase risk of exposure to hazardous substances.

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
- Bachelor's of Science and Nursing required.
- Current licensure to permit to practice as a registered nurse in the state of Wisconsin.
- Current certification or eligibility to become BLS and ACLS certified.
- Minimum of 2 years clinical management experience preferred.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, and talk and hear.
- The Infusion Services Director is frequently required to stand, walk and reach with hands and arms. The Director is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, stoop, kneel or crouch, and detect odors.
- The Director must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
- Good hearing is necessary to receive detailed information through oral communication and to make fine discriminations in sound.
- Visual acuity is needed to assess color changes, to verify accuracy of written materials.
- Computer/keyboard skills required. Must have the ability to operate in a Windows environment.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Must understand and accept the possibility of exposure to inside environmental conditions, such as infectious/communicable diseases, noise, blood and bloodborne diseases, chemicals and/or chemical fumes, odors, gases, dusts, and physical injury/verbal abuse from an out-of-control patient. Frequent exposure to distressed patients, families or visitors. Must be able to function effectively under stressful situations.
