Primary Function:
University Health Services (UHS) is an ambulatory healthcare facility offering general medical and preventive care to students. The Director assumes leadership, vision, direction, and general operations of the clinic. The UHS Director is a key collaborative partner with departments within the University Wellness Commons. The Director of UHS is a visionary leader dedicated to promoting a holistic approach to individual and community wellbeing in congruence with the University’s mission to educate the whole student. The Director must demonstrate strong leadership abilities, excellent interpersonal skills, effective communication, strategic planning, and the ability to execute these skills professionally.
This position works with considerable independence and self-direction. Only the general direction and scope of the work to be accomplished are discussed with the supervisor.

Typical Duties & Responsibilities:
- Provide integrated clinical and administrative leadership, ensuring alignment between patient care, staffing, compliance, and financial management.
- Offer high-quality student care while complying with institutional, legal, and regulatory standards.
- Prioritize business-oriented process improvement, ensuring that workflows, billing, and resource allocation are efficient and sustainable.
- Has advanced and applied knowledge in the medical field and is responsible, along with all the UWC staff, for mentoring students regarding their health and well-being, through individual meetings, participation in the Sewanee Wellness Advisory Committee, and planning and implementation of outreach programming.
- Develops and updates (annually, at a minimum) clinical policies and procedures in conjunction with other Nurse Practitioners, the collaborating physician, and the Executive Director of the Wellness Commons.
- Updates clinical protocol information as needed.
- Ensures compliance with all federal, state, and local regulations governing healthcare delivery, including FERPA, OSHA, and applicable state medical board regulations.
- Oversees the University’s immunization compliance policies and procedures and ensures that incoming students submit all necessary medical documentation.
- Oversees staff adherence to University and Wellness Commons policies, fostering a culture of accountability and integrity.
- Oversees the maintenance and safety of all student health information.
- Performs regular chart audits to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with clinical protocols, billing requirements, and privacy laws.
- Implements quality improvement initiatives based on audit findings and data trends.
- Provides feedback and training to clinical staff on documentation standards and best practices.
- Ensures staff receive the annual Wellness Commons Privacy Policy Training and reports any privacy concerns to the Privacy Officer.
- Oversees UHS budget and reviews budgetary issues monthly (at a minimum), in collaboration with the other WC Directors.
- Oversees purchasing for UHS, including approving all orders of medications and medical supplies.
- Consults with the Executive Director about budgetary needs.
- Collects data necessary for the mid-year and annual reports. Ensures that this data helps to identify trends in illnesses, community health, and utilization of UHS to the WC Executive Director and the University administration.
- Supervises and evaluates members of the health service administrative staff and professional medical staff.
- Oversees the billing of insurance and student accounts.
- Establishes and upholds professional standards of conduct for all staff, ensuring alignment with university values and ethical healthcare delivery.
- Addresses personnel issues proactively, mediating conflicts and implementing corrective action plans as needed.
- Fosters a respectful, inclusive, and patient-centered clinical environment.
- Provides ongoing professional development and training to promote clinical excellence and cultural competency.
- Acts as liaison between healthcare providers and medical office staff. Works with existing staff to develop their areas of expertise.
- Attends weekly WC Directors’ meetings and communicates pertinent information from those meetings to the UHS staff.
- Leads or organizes projects and workshops that impact student and community health
- Works collaboratively with the Athletic Department and Athletic Training to maintain compliance dictated by NCAA regulations.
- Maintains a collaborative relationship with the Tennessee Department of Health and other medical systems and organizations in this region.
- Maintains state licensure and continuing education requirements.
- Communicates regularly with collaborating physician(s) and manages compliance and contract renewal for supervising clinician.
- Collaborates with the Executive Director of the Wellness Commons to implement strategies and programs that impact student wellbeing.
- Serves as an educational resource for university personnel, especially those responsible for student welfare, such as Residential Life, McClurg, Athletics, and the Office of Global Affairs.
Judgment Required:
Performance of the essential duties of this position is dependent upon independent ingenuity and developmental efforts.
Machines & Equipment Used:
Medical equipment, including but not limited to: stethoscope, otoscope, blood pressure monitor, pulse oximeter, glucometer, urine dipsticks and test cups, lab equipment (including tests for influenza, COVID-19), pregnancy, suture kits, speculums, etc.
Budgetary Responsibility:
Directly prepares the budget for the program and has full responsibility for planning, forecasting, approval, and balancing the budget.
Personal Interaction/Communication:
Student Contact: Daily
Internal: Must participate in the WC leadership team meetings and the Sewanee Advisory Committee meetings
External: Must meet with and/or present to regents, parents, and others as needed
Requirements
Attributes of a Successful Candidate
Education:
Minimum of a Master’s Degree in nursing from an accredited school of nursing or an associate’s degree from an accredited school of nursing and a bachelor’s degree in a healthcare-related field or higher.
Maintain continuing education requirements to maintain licensure.
Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years of nursing experience.
- Minimum 3 years of leadership, supervisory, and management experience.
Experience overseeing budgets. - Must have excellent interpersonal communication skills and the willingness to collaborate with several departments within the WC and the University.

Licenses & Certifications:
Licensed (or license-eligible) to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in the state of Tennessee.
