The Director provides strategic vision and leadership for the Office of PittServes, advancing their mission to educate, connect, and catalyze students toward lifelong civic engagement. This role serves as the primary liaison between Student Affairs, the Office of Engagement and Community Affairs (ECA), academic units, and community partners, ensuring alignment with institutional priorities and community needs. The Director will lead the team in transforming the department's work to realize the vision of achieving resilient and equitable communities while inspiring civically minded individuals.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Vision
Develop and articulate the office's vision, mission, and strategic goals in alignment with Plan for Pitt 2028 and ECA frameworks. Lead office transformation efforts, including program assessment, innovation, and alignment with best practices in civic and community engagement. Establish and maintain standards of practice that reflect ethical, positive, and productive community engagement. Facilitate strategic initiatives with campus partners, such as the Civic Learning Distinction
Relationship Building & External Engagement
Cultivate and sustain partnerships with ECA, academic departments at undergraduate and graduate levels, Student Affairs units, and key community stakeholders. Serve as a visible thought leader on campus and in the Pittsburgh community regarding student civic engagement. Partner with the Office of Sustainability to support the Pitt Sustainability Plan and Pitt Climate Action Plan. Represent the office on university committees and in regional/national professional organizations. Facilitate rich partnerships grounded in place-based approaches, asset-based frameworks, and community-identified goals.
Divisional Leadership & Collaboration
Serve as a divisional leader, collaborating with colleagues on the Student Culture and Community team to identify and implement shared student learning experiences. Partner with the Student Affairs leadership team to facilitate divisional goals and assessment in support of the Student Affairs vision: to support the whole student. Perform duties beyond departmental scope, including Welcome Week activities, divisional committees, events, and other cross-functional assignments as needed.
Staff Leadership & Development
Supervise the Assistant Director and provide indirect oversight of all office staff. Foster a collaborative team culture grounded in shared purpose, professional growth, and community building. Lead recruitment, onboarding, and professional development initiatives that build competencies in both student development and community engagement, with emphasis on inclusion and belonging.
Operations & Assessment
Oversee budget planning and resource allocation using values-based budgeting principles. Ensure robust assessment of program outcomes and student learning. Guide strategic communications and visibility efforts.
Job Summary
Executes strategic alignment, long-term planning, operational planning, and management oversight of major college, campus, or University-wide student affairs functions. Establishes the direction, goals, implementation strategy, evaluation means, student initiatives, and policies of the department. Maintains responsibility for budgetary matters. Directs effective communications, promotions, and public relations for the department.
Essential Functions
Provides strategic alignment, long-term planning, and management oversight of major college, campus, or University-wide student affairs functions in areas including student affairs, student finance, admissions, student records, and study abroad programs. -Translates strategic
and tactical business plans into student operational plans. Establishes the direction, goals, implementation strategy, and policies of the department. -Evaluates and improves Student Affairs' programs; formulates and implements student policies; develops innovative strategies
for providing student services, and employs practices that foster recruitment, retention, and enhancement of the overall quality of the student college experience. - Formulates and administers the annual operating budget. Procures agreements for materials or services. -Oversees and develops initiatives such as peer tutoring, academic coaching, transfer student success, reducing/eliminating academic disparities, and academic standing policies and procedures. -Develops and maintains partnerships throughout the University. Advises senior administrators in implementing programs, new initiatives, and special projects. -Oversees communications, promotions, and public relations for the department to achieve departmental goals and objectives. -Ensures that all programs and activities comply with university, state, and federal regulations. - Serves on various University, division, and departmental committees and represents the department at various state and national associations. -Supervises staff, which includes hiring, performance reviews, and documenting disciplinary actions and other human resource administration. Manages
work schedules and approves timecards. Provides professional development opportunities. Additional details about Required Licensure/Certification: Master's in higher ed, public admin, community development, or related field required. 7-10 years of experience in civic engagement, community partnerships, or student affairs. Demonstrated success in strategic planning, staff supervision, collaboration, program development, & partnership development. Deep knowledge of best practices in civic learning, community engagement, ethical partnership principles, and experiential education. Experience grounding work in inclusion & belonging essential.
Work Schedule: Standard: 8:30-5:00 p.m. with option to work from home 2 or more days per week
Work Arrangement: Hybrid: Combination of On-Campus and Remote work as determined by the department.
Hiring Range: $80,000-$83,000
