General Role Description
The Director of Engineering is responsible for leading in a team environment to deliver the best possible service to our clients while differentiating the company from the competition and building a growing base of business by evolving the Engineering Core Discipline. The individual will thoughtfully and proactively develop the Core Discipline. This includes identifying and pursuing opportunities to develop people, processes, procedures, tools and technology focusing on client organizations where appreciation exists for the added value brought by the firm. Additionally, this position will have a significant external leadership role in the business community. The Director of Engineering will be asked to participate in strategic planning and the overall direction of the company.
This position reports to the President and has direct supervisory responsibilities of the Senior Project Manager and R.M.E roles.

Engineering Development
Have a vision and direction for engineering.
Oversee processes.
Drive continuous improvement.
Participate in the development and updating of Roles Profiles.
Assess desire & skill sets of people.
Review industry compensation.
Facilitate an effective Review Process.
Participates in establishing a Leadership Development Program for certain individuals.
Assist in the development of Personal Development Plans.
Assist in the development of training / developing / coaching & mentoring programs.
Provide input on compensation programs.
Conduct Employee Surveys.
Provide input on Retention Program.
Work with the Leadership Team to recruit, interview, hire & on-board staff.
Engineering
Maintain and monitor staffing levels, knowledge-skills-attributes, expectations and motivation to fulfill organizational requirements.
Work with Project Managers regarding all personnel assignments with emphasis on matching skills to project requirements.
Work with Project Managers regarding project status reports and delivery schedules and distribute to project teams.
Establish, monitor, and train personnel on work plans that deliver profitable projects on time to satisfied clients.
Oversee a strict quality control program and procedures for design through construction including budget and schedule objectives.
Analyze and continually improve the quality of firm deliverables.
Trouble-shoot problem projects and work with teams to remedy production issues.
Leverage “lessons learned” company-wide.
Evaluate trends and disruptions; incorporate emerging technologies into new company capabilities.
Lead, mentor and refine the project management team to execute management and organizational planning for projects and guide them in delivering quality products and services to the client in a timely manner.
Evolve the company’s engineering expertise, design services and production model as capabilities grow and improve.
Builds, develops, and grows any business relationships vital to the success of the company.
Supervises important job closeout processes to ensure documentation, lessons learned and filings are complete.
Actively meet with project managers to increase knowledge of project scopes, budgeting and revenue projects.
Full control of engineering and design department software needs, budgets and purchases necessary for staff to deliver products and services and internal management and organizational needs that support production.
Report directly to CEO and CFO for quarterly revenue projections and maintaining budgets.
Oversees and assures proper administration of all monthly project billings.
Assists in developing the company staffing plan and preliminary man hour budgets on all company-wide active and projected projects.
Business Development / Marketing & Sales
Foster Business Development and Marketing within the culture
Participate in BD and Marketing Meetings
Proactive use of the Client Relationship Management (CRM) Database
Participate in the Market Share Process – focused on market segments / new clients / new business
Participate in the Client Share Process – focused on existing clients / growing existing business
Participate in select Project Pursuit Approaches
Finance / Risk Management
Lead Core Discipline risk management
Lead project oriented risk management
Understand and comply with all client contracts
Understand and comply with all relevant insurance requirements
Manage compliance with any legal and regulatory requirements
Assesses and anticipate project risks to develop procedures for mitigation and response strategies for projects managers and designers
Actively review contracts, agreements and terms from clients, direct legal team on necessary returned comments, negotiate contractual agreements and terms that protect the company’s risk level
Implements and grows a proactive Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) plan for the company
External Leadership / Community
Establish a business - public presence

Be a leader in industry associations
Participate in a PEER Group
Actively advocate for the firm
Serve as the primary spokesperson and representative for the firm
