Reporting to the Executive Director, Business Development & Strategic Alliances, the Director, Alliance Management will be responsible for strategic leadership and day-to-day management of the full range of Viridian’s strategic alliances. These existing alliances include both development and commercial agreements with geographic partners (including in Japan and China) and R&D collaborations in support of Viridian’s early-stage portfolio. This role will work closely with Business Development, Legal, Program Management, other key cross-functional stakeholders, and senior management to support existing partnerships and to establish new alliances as the business continues to scale. The ideal candidate will have experience managing multi-functional alliances and proactively identifying and resolving potential issues across a broad range of strategic collaborations.
This role is based in our Waltham, MA headquarters. Our office-based employees are required to work in the office three (3) days a week.
Responsibilities (including, but not limited to):
Alliance Leadership & Governance
- Serve as a primary alliance point-of-contact with Viridian’s strategic partners
- Lead full range of strategic communications with alliance partners and governance meetings (JSC, sub-teams, escalations)
- Ensure effective and efficient decision-making, employing good judgement in determining decisions and issues to escalate to governance
Alliance Management & Execution
- Ensure smooth execution of full range of alliance activities in support of key alliance and portfolio goals, holding partners and internal stakeholders accountable for progress
- Anticipate and identify potential alliance issues and risks, and proactively drive to resolution with relevant stakeholders
- Prepare meeting agendas, presentations, and minutes/actions, with input from relevant stakeholders, to ensure productive and successful meetings with partners
Advocate for Viridian’s interests in alliance interactions; develop and implement creative, win-win solutions with partners
Relationship Management
- Establish high level of trust and communication with alliance counterparts at partner companies
- Partner closely with internal cross-functional stakeholders across research, clinical development, program management, technical operations, commercial, and other functions
- Maintain close collaboration with Viridian program teams to ensure alliance and program activities are well coordinated
Alliance Operations
- Develop regular alliance reporting dashboard for executive leadership
- Manage all contractual obligations to remain compliant with existing agreements
- Partner with legal and other internal SMEs on negotiating contract amendments and ancillary agreements (e.g., supply, quality, PV agreements) as needs arise
- Track internal resourcing to ensure alliances are appropriately supported without impacting other corporate priorities
- Support business development during negotiation of new partnerships to ensure optimal alliance governance and smooth alliance onboarding
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in life sciences (MS, MBA, PhD, MD) preferred
- Requires 10+ years of experience within the biopharmaceutical industry; 5+ of those years’ experience in alliance management, business development, program management/leadership, or related roles
- Experience managing multiple strategic partnerships simultaneously; exposure to global/international collaborations highly preferred
- Exceptional verbal and written communication and relationship management skills, with demonstrated ability to influence internally and externally without direct authority
- Established track record of solving problems and driving results in a fast-paced environment while managing competing demands
- Strong working knowledge of alliance frameworks and best practices; alliance or program management certification(s) a plus
- Ability to understand and interpret legal contracts; negotiation experience a plus
- Strong project management skills, and demonstrated ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams
- Strong commitment to ethical standards
- Proficient with Microsoft Office suite (i.e., Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, etc.)
- Ability to travel (domestic & international) up to 20%
