The Associate Radiation Safety Officer will assist and support the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) in the overall administration, management, and coordination of the University's radiation safety program to include the University of Pittsburgh and academically affiliated hospitals of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC). The Associate Radiation Safety Officer will supervise, and support health physics, medical physics, radiation safety, and related technical and regulatory activities associated with the research and clinical application of ionizing radiation within the University and affiliated UPMC facilities; and provide professional leadership related to these functions.
The employee will maintain a comprehensive knowledge of and ensure compliance with all applicable regulations and guidelines regarding the research and clinical application of ionizing radiation for the University and affiliated UPMC Hospitals, including NRC, PA DEP, DOT, OSHA, TCJ, FDA and ACR requirements. The employee will perform and/or review investigations of overexposures, accidents, spills, losses, thefts, unauthorized receipts, and other deviations from approved radiation safety practice; develop and implement appropriate corrective actions in response to incidents and program violations. The employee will perform radiation shielding calculations for new or renovated facilities. This position will have extensive contact with individuals from multiple departments within both the University and UPMC wherever radioactive material, x-ray equipment, or linear accelerators/cyclotrons are used. This position will have periodic contact with federal and state regulatory agencies for licensing and inspection processes. Employee will provide radiation safety training and instruction to all applicable University and hospital faculty, staff, and physicians, including residency training programs. Employee must maintain institutional radioactive materials, accelerator, and x-ray equipment licenses and registrations and participate in regulatory compliance inspections. ARSO will participate and provide support in the Radiation Safety Committee (RSC), Human Use Subcommittee (HUSC), and Radioactive Drug Research Committee (RDRC) activities.
At least five years of work experience in medical health physics and university biomedical research operations is required. Five years experience in health physics or experience working with a broad scope medical license is required. MS or PhD in Radiation Health, Radiation Physics or related field is highly preferred.
Radiation Safety at the University of Pittsburgh is responsible for ensuring that all sources of licensed radioactive material and ionizing radiation-producing equipment are used optimally and safely.
The Office of Research Protections (ORP) aids investigators in designing and performing research studies so they meet current ethical standards and conform to all applicable laws and regulations. The units that comprise the ORP accomplish this goal through education, prospective review of research protocols, consultations with investigators, and monitoring of ongoing studies.
Job Summary
Ensures the safe procurement, use, storage, control, and disposal of radioactive materials and radiation producing equipment. Works with Director- Radiation Safety in the administration, management and coordination of the University's radiation safety program at the University of Pittsburgh and academically affiliated hospitals of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC).
Essential Functions
- Prepares, reviews, updates, and implements radiation safety operations
- Collaborates with Director- Radiation Safety to maintain accurate records and required documentation for the University's compliance with state and federal regulations
- Responds to radiation safety emergencies, prepares and submits reports to designated governing bodies
- Manages the procedures required for transport and disposal of radioactive materials
- Maintains broad and current knowledge in radiation safety technology, regulations and guidelines
- Partners with personnel in departments at the University and UPMC that have radioactive material, x-ray equipment, or linear accelerators/cyclotrons
- Supervises assigned Radiation Safety personnel including hiring, performance management, and training

Additional details about Required Licensure/Certification: Certification (or board eligibility) by a specialty board whose certification process has been recognized by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and PA Department of Environmental Protection to meet the qualifications for an ARSO in accordance with 10 CFR 35.50. Certification (or board eligibility) by the American Board of Health Physics (CHP) or American Board of Medical Physics (ABMP) in Medical Health Specialty is preferred.
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:30 a.m.- 5:00 p.m.
