Job Summary
Reporting to the Medical Director, the Associate Medical Director provides clinical leadership and medical oversight for the University Health Center (UHC) and is a member of the Health Center Leadership Team. This position is primarily responsible for clinical decision-making, quality of care, patient safety, and the clinical oversight of medications and internal and external laboratory services, ensuring healthcare delivery aligns with professional standards, evidence-based practices, and all applicable regulatory requirements. The Associate Medical Director advances illness prevention, wellness initiatives, and health education while maintaining oversight of clinical practices and performance.
The Associate Medical Director provides direct patient care within the scope of licensure and serves as a clinical leader and resource for Providers, nursing staff, and interdisciplinary teams. In collaboration with the Medical Director and the Associate Director of Operations, this role supports operational efficiency, optimizes clinical workflows, advances quality improvement initiatives, and contributes to strategic planning to ensure the delivery of effective, timely, and student-centered healthcare services.
Job Duties
Duties & Responsibilities:
- Directly oversees clinical decision-making and the delivery of medical services at the University Health Center by establishing and monitoring evidence-based standards of care, reviewing clinical practices, and guiding providers and nursing staff. Conducts routine and targeted medical record and chart reviews to ensure accurate, complete, and timely documentation that supports efficient care delivery, sound clinical decision-making, and patient safety. Provides clinical oversight of medication management, including prescribing practices, formulary adherence, and medication safety, to ensure regulatory compliance and high-quality patient care. Serves as a clinical escalation resource for urgent or complex patient care issues, including designated after-hours consultation, to ensure continuity of care and optimal student health outcomes.
- Deliver clinical care to a diverse patient population, incorporating health equity principles and social determinants of health into medical decision-making and treatment planning.
- Provides direct clinical services within the scope of licensure, including assessment, diagnosis, treatment, follow-up care, and referrals. Maintains accurate, detailed, and timely documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR) to ensure continuity of care, regulatory compliance, and medical record integrity.
- Provides clinical oversight of internal and external laboratory services to ensure appropriate test ordering, result interpretation, documentation, and follow-up care. Collaborates with internal staff and external laboratory vendors to support quality standards, regulatory compliance, turnaround time expectations, and continuity of care. Reviews laboratory-related clinical issues. In collaboration with the Associate Director of Operations, reviews utilization trends, quality concerns, and recommends improvements to enhance patient safety, diagnostic accuracy, and care delivery.
- Monitors compliance with federal, state, and institutional healthcare regulations and accreditation standards, including requirements related to medication storage, prescribing, administration, and documentation. In collaboration with the Associate Director of Operations, reviews adverse events, clinical incidents, and patient safety concerns, and leads corrective actions and quality improvement initiatives to reduce risk and enhance the quality of care delivery.
- Leads structured peer review to assess the quality and effectiveness of clinical care, including review of documentation, clinical decision-making, guideline adherence, and patient outcomes. Provides clinical guidance, mentoring, and performance feedback to providers and nursing staff, and recommends corrective or developmental actions to support continuous quality improvement, patient safety, and regulatory compliance. In collaboration with the Associate Director of Operations, contributes clinical expertise to provider and nursing onboarding, training, and evaluation to ensure ongoing clinical competence and adherence to standards of care. Collaborates with the Medical Director and Associate Director of Operations to align clinical services with operational workflows. Advises on clinic flow, care coordination, service capacity, and clinical scheduling needs to promote efficiency and timely access to care.
- In collaboration with the Medical Director, interprets and applies clinical policies, protocols, and medical standards in complex or ambiguous situations, escalating matters to the Medical Director as appropriate. Oversees infection prevention and control practices within the Health Center, including communicable disease response, isolation guidance, and coordination with public health authorities as appropriate.
- Leads and supports illness prevention strategies, wellness programming, and student health education initiatives aligned with public health best practices. Provides clinical leadership grounded in best practices in college health and demonstrates experience delivering equitable, culturally responsive care to diverse young adult populations within a higher education or comparable ambulatory care setting.
- Contributes clinical expertise to strategic planning, committee work, and interdisciplinary initiatives related to student health, wellness, and university-wide objectives. Completes additional responsibilities as needed to support Health Center operations, accreditation readiness, or emerging institutional needs.
- Develops and oversees protocols for vaccine, immunization, and medication management in accordance with regulatory requirements and University policies. Provides clinical oversight of immunization practices, prescribing standards, and safe medication use, and reviews related EMR documentation to ensure accuracy, compliance, patient safety, and continuity of care.
- Oversees and supports cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), Basic Life Support (BLS), and other required clinical competency training for providers, nursing staff, and clinical support personnel. Ensures staff maintain current certifications and clinical competencies in accordance with regulatory requirements, institutional policies, and best practices. Provides or coordinates clinical training, drills, and skill validations to promote preparedness, patient safety, and high-quality care delivery.
- Oversees and supports clinical credentialing, privileging, and scope-of-practice determinations for licensed providers in collaboration with the Medical Director, ensuring qualifications, competencies, and privileges align with regulatory requirements, institutional policies, and standards of care.
- Must be able to perform all duties as assigned.
Requested Minimum Qualifications
Education Required:
Must hold a Medical Doctor (M.D.), Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.), or Doctor of Nursing Practice (D.N.P.) degree from an accredited institution, with completion of an accredited post-doctoral residency or advanced clinical training program appropriate to the role.
Experience Required:
Must have at least 5 years of progressive experience in a hospital or urgent care setting
Licensure/Certification Required:
Board-certified M.D., D.O., or D.N.P.
Must be license-eligible to practice in the State of Maryland
Must hold a current DEA, NPI, and CLIA registration, as well as maintain basic CPR and ACLS certification
Must have current professional malpractice insurance
Other Preferences for Consideration
Experience Required:
Must have at least 5 years of progressive experience in a healthcare setting (for example: hospital, urgent care, college health, etc.)
Experience Preferred:
A minimum of 3 years of professional/supervisory experience is required, involving competence in the clinical setting.
