Job Duties
Reporting to the Director, the Associate Director for Student Disability Support Services (SDSS) plays a critical leadership role in advancing Morgan State University's commitment to access, inclusion, and equity. The Associate Director has primary responsibility for overseeing and ensuring the timely, consistent, and compliant delivery of reasonable accommodations for students with disabilities, in accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
In collaboration with the Director, the Associate Director supports the development, implementation, and assessment of policies, procedures, and service delivery models that promote equal access to academic, residential, and co-curricular experiences. SDSS fosters inclusive and equitable learning environments for students with disabilities as a core expression of Morgan State University's values related to diversity, equity, and student success.
The Associate Director also provides strategic oversight of accommodation processes, case management, and staff support, ensuring that services are student-centered, legally sound, and aligned with institutional priorities.
- Manage a complex caseload of students with documented disabilities, including mental health diagnoses, by conducting intake meetings, reviewing documentation, determining eligibility, and coordinating appropriate reasonable accommodations.
- Ensure full compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act by overseeing accommodation determinations, maintaining accurate records, and addressing compliance concerns in a timely and legally sound manner.
- Serve as a primary liaison to academic, residential, and administrative departments across campus to consult on disability-related matters, accommodation implementation, and inclusive practices.
- Develop and deliver training and educational programs for faculty, staff, and students on disability awareness, accommodation processes, accessibility best practices, and legal obligations.
- Collect, analyze, and report data related to student utilization, accommodation trends, service outcomes, and compliance metrics to inform decision-making, improve services, and support institutional assessment, accreditation, and reporting requirements.
- Assist the Director with the daily operations of Student Disability Support Services, including workflow management, process improvement, policy implementation, and service delivery assessment.
- Support the supervision, training, and professional development of SDSS staff, including contributing to performance evaluations, mentoring, and ensuring consistent application of policies and procedures.
- Respond to and resolve access-related concerns across campus, including classroom, testing, housing, and co-curricular environments, using an interactive and student-centered approach.
- Collaborate with off-campus providers, community agencies, and medical and mental health professionals to support documentation review, referrals, and continuity of care for students.
- Assist in the management and oversight of the SDSS Testing Center, including scheduling, proctoring standards, exam security, and accommodation implementation, as needed.
- Ensure SDSS technical standards are upheld, including accessibility of digital platforms, assistive technologies, and documentation systems used to support students and manage accommodations.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of assessment tools, surveys, and evaluation strategies to measure program effectiveness, identify gaps in access or service delivery, and recommend data-informed improvements aligned with University goals.
Requested Minimum Qualifications
Education Required:
Bachelor's degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, Higher Education Administration, or in a Related Field
Experience Required:
Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience providing disability-related services, student support services, case management, counseling, or related work
Experience interpreting and applying disability documentation and determining reasonable accommodations
Other Preferences for Consideration
Education Preferred:
Master's degree in Education, Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, Higher Education Administration, or in a Related Field
Experience Preferred:
Experience working in higher education
Experience with ADA and Section 504 compliance in an educational setting
Experience supervising staff and/or coordinating services or programs
Experience working with students with mental health diagnoses
Licensure/Certification Preferred:
Certification or professional training related to disability services, accessibility, counseling, or higher education administration (e.g., AHEAD professional development, ADA compliance training)
