OverviewEstablished in 1971, Big Canyon Country Club is a prestigious, invitation-only private club in Newport Beach, California. Its 18-hole championship course, designed by Desmond Muirhead, has a storied history of hosting 15 state, regional, and national championships. The par-72 layout features year-round Bermuda grass and measures 6,919 yards with a 74.1 course rating.
The 70,000-square-foot clubhouse offers members three distinct dining areas and a sophisticated wine program led by a Master Sommelier. Additionally, the Wellness Center provides a full suite of spa and salon services. Big Canyon is well-known throughout Southern California for its culture of service and a dedicated team that maintains an exceptionally high standard for the membership.
The club is currently undergoing a major golf course renovation led by acclaimed architect Andrew Green. Scheduled for completion later this year, the project is designed to elevate the course and improve the overall playing experience.
Position Summary
Big Canyon Country Club is looking for a dedicated PGA Professional to assist with our daily golf operations. This role is built for a professional who excels in operational logistics and high-level service management. Reporting directly to the Head Golf Professional, you will ensure the member experience is seamless from arrival to departure, maintaining the standards expected at a premier private club.
Experience Required
- PGA Membership: 2+ years as a Class A Member in good standing.
- Experience in a private club or high-end facility with a focus on consistent, attentive service.
- Ability to manage and hold staff accountable to daily operational standards.
- Bachelor's degree in Golf Management, Business Administration, or a related field preferred.
- Ability to work flexible schedules, including weekends, holidays, and early mornings/evenings as required by golf operations.
- Consistently provide extraordinary, anticipatory service, recognizing and addressing individual member preferences and needs.
- Strong organizational, planning and prioritization skills.
- Professional demeanor, polished appearance, and a strong work ethic.
- Working knowledge of Golf Genius, Club Essential and Microsoft Office Suite.
Essential Responsibilities
Player Service Leadership & Operations
- Lead the Outside Team: Direct supervision of the bag room, practice facilities, and cart fleet.
- Maintain Standards: Ensure the practice range and staging areas are organized and clean at all times.
- Staff Training: Supervise and train Player Service staff to provide proactive, professional service to the membership.
- Fleet Oversight: Manage the daily care, rotation, and cleaning of the golf cart fleet.
On-Course Experience & Tournament Support
- Tee Sheet Management: Monitor daily play and pace of play to ensure a smooth experience for members and guests.
- Event Support: Assist the Head Golf Professional with the setup and execution of member tournaments and leagues, handling staging, scoring, and on-course logistics.
- Policy Enforcement: Professionally enforce club rules and golf etiquette.
Instruction & Player Development
- Program Delivery: Help run clinics and programs for all skill levels.
- Coaching: Provide private lessons and group clinics that help members improve their game.
- Youth Golf: Contribute to the growth and execution of youth programs and camps.
Golf Shop & Merchandising
- Retail Support: Assist with daily shop operations, including visual merchandising, inventory management, and special orders.
- Point-of-Sale: Handle member transactions and custom club fittings with high attention to detail.
