Preferred Qualifications Position Summary
Provide assistance to the Barn Manager with the care and management of the UGA Equestrian Team equine athletes. Job duties include but are not limited to health and maintenance of equines (E.g. daily equine care, veterinary care, and therapeutic management), inventory and organization of equine supplies, oversight and development of part time/student employees, assist with Equestrian competitions, and help maintain premier NCAA equine program. Coordinate with the University of Georgia College of Veterinary Medicine as well as other veterinary practices to provide equine health care. May represent the equestrian barn in meetings and assume duties as directed in the absence of the farm or barn manager.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
Skills in the oversight, management, and maintenance of horses, part-time and student workers, facilities and equipment.
Physical Demands
Bending, stooping, lifting approximately 50 lbs. Driving as needed to perform job related duties.

Duties/Responsibilities
Veterinary Care - Assist Barn Manager with Veterinary Care of Equines.
- Assist with the administration of medications, treatment of injuries, deworming, vaccinations, coggins/EIA tests, Adequan injections, aftercare of joint injections, veterinary appointments, chiropractic appointments, farrier appointments.
Therapeutic Rehabilitation & Equine Exercise - Management of medical treatments & therapeutic care under guidance of Barn & Farm Manager.
- Fungal treatments, cold hosing / icing treatments, bandaging, surgical after care, bathing & grooming of equines, Equiband exercise, Laser therapy, Bemer treatments, massage pad treatments, exercise management of hot walker treatments & therapies.
Health & Maintenance - Assist Barn Manager with daily care of Equines.
- Feed, hay, water, stall cleaning, pasture integration, pasture management, equine nutrition management, transportation of equines, general daily horse care.
Inventory & Organization - Maintain inventory & organization of medical & therapeutic supplies.
- Medications: injectable medications, tablets / capsules / suspension ointments, wound sprays, thrush treatments, hoof packing, poultices.
- Medical Supplies: Needles, syringes, gauze, sheet cotton, Telfa pads, vet wrap, elasticon, Animal Lintex pads, etc.
- Grooming Supplies: Fungal treatments, shampoos, conditioners, chlorhexidine, betadine, rubbing alcohol.
Cleanliness & Aesthetic -Assist Barn Manager with overall cleanliness & organization of barn & pastures to maintain safety for equines & student athletes.
- Barn aisle, feed room, storage room, medication storage, horse stalls, tack room, pastures, paddocks.
Oversight & Development of Part-Time/Student Employees
- Supervise part time employees while on shift to maintain safe environment for part time employees, student athletes, & equines.
- Teaching and mentoring part time employees & student athletes in safe horse handling practices as well as minor wound or skin condition treatments.
Competitions - Assist Barn Staff with horse management & preparation of facility.
- Relocation of equines for competitions
- Medication administration
- Pre & Post meet therapies
- Pre & Post meet treatments
- Critical Care during meet
- Return of equines to pre-meet pasture / stall routines.
Other duties as assigned.
