Description
The purpose of this position is to serve as an Art Conservator performing professional duties as the art conservator for the Department of the Air Force (DAF) Art Collection. The Conservator provides general conservation oversight for the DAF Art Collection and plays a key role in the collections care program ensuring long-term preservation.
Requirements
The preferred candidate will possess extensive experience in the hands-on conservation of fine art, with a specialized focus on paintings. This background must include the scientific analysis of artists' materials, condition assessment of canvases and supports, and the application of advanced preservation treatments. Key competencies include pigment stabilization, surface cleaning, varnish removal and application, structural repair of canvas and panel supports, and ethical inpainting techniques. The candidate must be adept at researching and evaluating new concepts in art conservation, and creating and managing a fully functional conservation laboratory, including the procurement and safe handling of specialized chemicals, solvents, and adhesives. A critical aspect of this role is the ability to develop, manage, and complete complex conservation projects for paintings and other works of art, from initial assessment to final documentation. Proven experience collaborating with curatorial and exhibition design teams is essential to ensure the safe display of light-sensitive artworks. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated ability in providing expert guidance on appropriate environmental controls, lighting levels, and mounting solutions for artworks. Furthermore, the candidate must have experience developing and delivering training on the proper handling and care of fine art to diverse audiences.
