Salary: $152,555 – $237,254 annually (salary DOQ)

The Opportunity
The Los Angeles County Public Defender’s Office—founded in 1914 and the nation’s largest public defender office—serves as a beacon for client-centered indigent defense, with 1,140+ employees across 32 locations representing 100,000+ people annually.
The Administrative Deputy II (UC) is the Department’s highest-level administrative officer, directing and overseeing all departmental administrative support operations and services and providing strategic guidance on administrative policy, budget/contract development, and compliance.
This position is unclassified (at-will) and is subject to the County’s MAPP (Range R13).
Key Responsibilities
- Direct all central administrative functions, including fiscal services (budget, accounting, revenue management, grants), human resources, payroll, facilities planning, and procurement.
- Direct and coordinate Department-wide HR functions (classification, compensation, recruitment/retention, performance management, labor relations, RTW programs, and RTW programs, and Civil Service matters).
- Provide executive oversight of capital planning and facilities strategy, and help establish organizational priorities, performance metrics, and resource allocation strategies.
- Recommend and implement policies/procedures to improve service delivery, strengthen compliance, and control administrative costs; oversee preparation of reports for senior leadership and oversight agencies.
Qualifications (Minimum Requirements)
Option 1:
Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Public Administration, Management, or closely related field, plus two years of highly responsible experience supervising administrative staff (finance/budget/HR, etc.), including one year at the level of Administrative Services Manager III or higher.
Option 2:
In lieu of a degree, five years of progressively responsible administrative experience analyzing/resolving complex problems (financial management, programs, personnel, budget, systems/procedures), including two years supervising staff and one year at the level of Administrative Services Manager III or higher.
Desirable Experience
Senior-level leadership in complex organizations with mission-critical operations; enterprise oversight across HR/finance/contracts/procurement/facilities; public-sector stewardship and regulated procurement/contract environments; justice/court-related operational acumen; and strategic performance management.
